Welcome New Member Andrew Garvey

4/6/2021

Picture
District 5 welcomes a new member: Andrew Garvey. While Andy doesn't mention humor writing as one of his areas, he seems to have a knack for it.

Name: Andrew Garvey

Town: Rose Hill, KS

What kind of writing do you do?

I've written sci-fi ever since I realized I didn't know what "literary fiction" means. I sometimes do junk poetry to help out my illustrator, and medium.com's financial/business rags buy my short pieces on slow weeks.

What writing projects have you completed or are currently working on?

I'm currently writing to women on match.com in my usual voice and because that's not short-form, I come across as overeager. A small, traditional press in NYC went out of their wheelhouse and published a science fiction novel of mine in 2016 called Mind Control Empire. It sold poorly. After that, I dabbled in self-publishing, and we did a couple of adult coloring books called The Color of Poetry and Quietus: The Color of Poetry II when the fad took a dive in popularity. I don't think we caused it.

Do you have a website or a facebook page that you'd like to share with other KAC members?

But I barely know them ...

Is there anything else you'd like other KAC members to know about you?

I thought I was the one to discover that avocado and kimchi go really well together, but there are a lot of recipes online already.

Welcome New Member Sharon Riley

District 2 has a new member! Let's all welcome Sharon Riley to our happy band of writers.

Name:
  Sharon Riley
Town:  Lawrence, KS

What kind of writing do you do?   I work at KU Libraries and I’m a certified coach (ACC) with ICF, so most of my writing lately has been work-related.   When I have time though, I also like to write poetry and fiction.  I’ve been out of it for a while, so hoping this club can help me get back to it!

What writing projects have you completed or are currently working on?  A fiction piece.   I had some poetry published years ago, but too long ago to really mention, lol.

Do you have a website or a facebook page that you'd like us to share with other KAC members?   Not at this time.

Is there anything else you’d like other KAC members to know about you?

I love historical fiction.  Currently reading “The All True Travels and Adventures of Liddie Newton” by Jane Smiley.   Reading about Lawrence in 1855 is a hoot.   I also really enjoy memoir or fiction that reads like memoir.

What would you like to gain from your membership with the Kansas Authors Club?
Writers are just about the most interesting people in the world to me.    I miss having that community so I’m looking forward to that.  I also need more accountability for my writing.

Welcome, Anne Kniggendorf!

2/20/2021

Today we welcome Anne Kniggendorf as a new member of the Kansas Authors Club. She lives in Shawnee.

Anne released a book in September entitled: Secret Kansas City. Check it out here: https://annekniggendorf.com/index.php/secret-kansas-city/

What kind of writing do you do, Anne? Journalism, creative nonfiction, fiction

Please share information about writing projects you’ve completed or are currently working on: I write for several media agencies around Kansas City, mostly for KCUR 89.3 (NPR in Kansas City), but sometimes the Star, the Pitch, and others.

Do you have a website or a facebook page that you'd like us to share with other KAC members? annekniggendorf.com and https://www.facebook.com/AnneKKniggendorf

What would you like to gain from your membership with the Kansas Authors Club?  I think all of the above (or below)
  1. Networking and/or friendships with other writers
  2. Entering the KAC writing contests
  3. Information on the writing craft
  4. Information on publishing
  5. Information on promotion

Anne provided two links of upcoming online events:
This one is today at 2:00 p.m. https://www.wornallmajors.org/read-with-us-in-2021/

And this one is on March 9. https://www.mymcpl.org/events/69467/secret-kansas-city-zoom

We're happy to have you with us, Anne! And we hope to meet you in person one of these days.

Welcome, RONN PETERS

Whatever interests me today, tomorrow or last week.

Do you have a website or a facebook page that you'd like us to share with other KAC members?

Welcome, Adam Ahlers

Picture

Today, we are happy to introduce a new member from Manhattan. Welcome to the Kansas Authors Club, Adam.

Name:
Adam Ahlers

Town: Manhattan, KS (born and raised on a ranch/farm in Clearwater, NE)

What kind of writing do you do?

I teach Scientific Writing at Kansas State University. I also spend a lot of time writing my own scientific papers, book chapters, and reports and have published some articles regarding nature and science in popular magazines.

If you would like to, please share information about writing projects you’ve completed or are currently working on.

I spend most of my time writing for peer-reviewed scientific journals. I'm finishing a book chapter now about muskrats and muskrat ecology. Most of my work is very technical and is focused on presenting results of my ecological research.

Do you have a website or a facebook page that you'd like us to share with other KAC members?
www.ahlerswildlifelab.com

Is there anything else you’d like other KAC members to know about you?

My family is awesome, and I spend as much time as I can with them. My wife is a graphic artist and Marketing Director at Kansas State University. My two daughters (9- and 7-years old) are creative artists that share my interest in the natural world. We love to hunt, fish, and find fossils in the Flint Hills with our 2-year old English Setter (Maggie). In my professional life, I'm an applied wildlife ecologist and Associate Professor at Kansas State University. I study everything from semiaquatic mammal ecology in Voyageurs National Park to swift fox populations in western, Kansas.

What would you like to gain from your membership with the Kansas Authors Club?

Everything that there is to offer! I would like to branch out and become a more creative writer. My past training and experience have focused exclusively on technical scientific writing. It has become a bit boring to me, and I'm searching for alternative ways to continue my love of writing.

Welcome new member Julie Ann BAKER BRIN

9/23/2020

Picture

We are excited to introduce our newest KAC member: Julie Ann Baker Brin! She joins us from Park City, District 5.

We asked Julie a few questions so we could learn a bit about her.

Name:

Julie Ann Baker Brin (or Julie Brin … but NOT Julie Baker Brin, because my maiden name became my second middle name, just to confuse anyone with a database … or really anyone).

Town:
Wichita (technically: Park City, but USPS’s zip code lookup stubbornly insists it’s Wichita).

What kind of writing do you do?
Poetry-like substances, lyrics, and micro-stories for fun. (Meeting minutes for work … and for anyone with insomnia.)

If you would like to, please share information about writing projects you’ve completed or are currently working on.
I am honored to be amongst so many talented and experienced writers featured in Gretchen Eick and Cora Poage’s The Death Project: An Anthology for our Times, which was just published (ISBN: 978-1-7342272-6-0 paperback or 978-1-7342272-7-7 ebook) and whose net proceeds will fund frontline COVID-19 workers.

Do you have a website or a facebook page that you'd like us to share with other KAC members?
juliebrin.org (or juliebrin.com, but I’m a dot-org kinda gal).

Is there anything else you’d like other KAC members to know about you?
I just resigned from the classic rock cover band I’d fronted since 2009, in order to return to original writing and hopefully buy back my soul. (Also, I may be hopelessly addicted to parentheticals … and ellipses.)

What would you like to gain from your membership with KAC? (Networking and/or friendships with other writers; Entering the KAC writing contests; Information on the writing craft; Information on publishing; Information on promotion)
Yes, please. All of the above.

Welcome, Julie!

When Julie's name first showed up in my inbox, it sounded familiar. And that's because she placed in both the poetry and prose categories in the District 7 Writing Contest recently. Congratulations!

Please take a few minutes to visit Julie's creative and well-designed website and read some of her pieces.

New BUSINESS MEMBER: POD PRINT

9/8/2020

The Kansas Authors Club welcomes POD Print which  has recently joined KAC as a business member.

Traci Grote, John Kush and Christy Exstrum operate POD in Wichita.

We asked Christy Exstrum of POD Print to tell us a bit about the business.

What kind of services or products do you offer for authors? POD Print offers self-publishing services for books in a wide variety of binding options, of course, but also business cards, marketing collateral, and trade show signage. Either provide your own print-ready files, or work with our designers for a custom cover and layout. We do not have quantity restrictions on how many books you can purchase, nor do we limit the dimensions of your book…everything is exactly how you want it!

What else would you like Kansas authors to know about your business?  POD Print provides a premium printing experience with superior quality and unmatched customer service, all right here in Kansas. We are very experienced working with self-published authors and companies and can walk you through the process. You will also receive a fully-finished proof before your full print run to ensure everything is just right.

Do you have a website that we can share with KAC members? www.podprint.com

Follow POD Print on Facebook @podprint.

Thank you, Christy, for sharing some information about POD Print. We hope that your membership with KAC will be beneficial to both your business and to Kansas writers.
