Wedding Imagination and Passion with Historical Investigation

About the Author:
Dr. Gretchen Eick has been in love with the world since 1962 when she traveled to west Africa to attend Fourah Bay College in Freetown, Sierra Leone for six months. Since then she has traveled to or lived in over forty countries, which shapes her interests and her writing of history, biography, political commentary, and fiction. As a late blooming academic, starting a PhD in her 50s, she combined her international interests with a passion for the history of the US, which she taught at Friends University in Wichita for twenty years before retiring to have more time to write. With her husband, the poet Michael Poage, she runs Blue Cedar Press and edits and publishes “new voices from the prairie and the planet.” Her experience working on Capitol Hill for fourteen years and researching, writing, and teaching history provide grist for her prodigious curiosity. She has written seven books, two of them prize-winners, and all but one written in the past eight years.

Eick’s published books include:
The Hard Verge, Britain 2025 (Amazon, 2019)
African Americans of Wichita (Arcadia, 2017)
Finding Duncan (Blue Cedar Press, 2015)
Maybe Crossings (Blue Cedar Press, 2015)

D5 member Robert L. Dean, Jr., has two reading events coming up. First, on Monday, February 7th, Dean will be reading on Zoom for the Oceanside (NY) Public Library's Poetry Near and Afar series, as the "Afar" poet. The "Near" poet is Dean's good friend J.R. Judy Turek of Long Island, NY. Moderator of this event is Tony Iovino of the Oceanside (NY) Public Library. The Zoom begins at 6 PM Central, and there is an open mic after the two features, so come prepared to read a poem in one of the best poetry Zooms going. The link to access the Zoom will be posted when it becomes available.

Second, Dean has been accepted as a reader at the 17th annual Scissortail Creative Writing Festival, taking place from Thursday, March 31st through Saturday, April 2nd, on the campus of East Central University in Ada, Oklahoma. Dean reads on Friday, April 1st, at 2:15 PM. He has been fortunate enough to attend this festival since 2018, except for pandemic cancellations. Welcome New Member Martha Danielson

1/28/2022

Let's give a hearty welcome to Martha Danielson of Lindsborg! (District 4)

My Writing Journey- Martha Danielson

I remember the first story I wrote.  I was in grade school and the story was about aliens invading a small town, a Twilight Zone kind of piece. That brief dabble in writing ended but I becoming a avid reader.  Writing did not capture me as a teenager or young adult, nor did I have the opportunity to take writing classes.  It was years later with the invention of a word processor and then the computer that unearthed a seed that, as a child, had been buried in my heart.  I began to believe that maybe I could write.  Spell check and adjustable fonts, whats not to love.
Dark times in my personal life drove me to begin journaling at a time when I was incapable of writing a postcard, but what I put onto endless pages of legal forms and in spiral bound notebooks saved my life.  What poured from my heart became stories that I could share with others.  Autobiographical works morphed into fiction and poetry.  It took the second time of retiring from full time jobs and moving to Kansas to put me into the position of being able to audit writing classes at the local college.  I absorbed it all and found such joy in the words I was putting on the page.

With the effects of the pandemic putting me into a place where I had so much time at home and after exhausting all my other methods of amusement, cleaning, sewing, painting, cooking (lots of muffins and cookies), I was inspired to begin writing again.  What I had been doing for years was stored on my computer just waiting for reviewing and editing, lots of editing.  I was surprised to find that some of what I had done was quite interesting.  The idea came to me that perhaps I could publish a piece that could be shared with others.  So here I am, a writer living in a new place with no one who might give me the support that I feel I need to carry on.  Huge fears loom in my mind when I think of putting what I have done out into the world.  I'm hoping my courage will not fail me as I continue on this writing journey.

Remembering Dr. Prem Bajaj, 2011-2013 Kansas Authors Club State President

1/26/2022

Picture
(seen here with wife, Raj Bajaj) Prem was a supporter of the youth awards. He worked to increase the diversity and numbers of entries in the annual youth contest. He also began sponsoring the Bajaj Award for the Best Youth Writer of the Year in 2013.
PictureThanks to Prem's October birthday, we often had birthday cake at the convention board meetings!
Dr. Prem Bajaj became a member of Kansas Authors Club in 2007. He served as State Financial Secretary in 2008 and State Treasurer in 2009 and 2010. In 2011, he became State President, serving for three years.

Remembering Prem:
What I remember about working with Prem is that he encouraged us to question our procedures and policies. We experimented with giving membership discounts for those who wanted to pay for multiple years. He was very good at getting a variety of people involved in committees and discussions on policy. Prem didn't just ask why our organization was lacking in diversity, he went out and recruited new members of all ages. He was also very kind and quick to acknowledge the work of others within the organization. He would often surprise members by making an example of them at a meeting or presentation.

D7 Member Millie Horlacher, Prem Bajaj, and D2 Member Alan D'Sousa, a Prem recruit who served as Literary Contest Chair, Youth Contest Chair, and assisted with conventions in a variety of ways over the years.
Remembering Prem:
I was a fairly new member when Prem was first elected president of the Kansas Authors Club. I didn’t even know who he was when he nominated me to be state treasurer. I accepted that nomination and held the post for about six years. During that time, I attended many meetings where he was in charge. I was always impressed with his gentle leadership style. Prem was instrumental in getting a yearly budget incorporated into our KAC operating structure. Another of his interests was the inclusion of younger writers into our group. I was impressed that he encouraged his grandchildren to write and to be members of KAC. I believe the grandchildren won several writing awards over the years; I was especially fond of one poem that John Bajaj wrote called “Brainstorming.” Prem was also very good at paying attention to and complimenting the work that KAC officers and others did. I admired him very much as a leader, and liked him very much as a person.

Welcome New Member Kristie Clark

1/24/2022

Picture
Kristie Clark is our newest KAC member. She's a physician and an author. Let's give her a good welcome to KAC and to D-7.

Here's what Kristie Clark has been up to:

Greetings fellow Kansas authors! I’m happy to have found you. My name is Kristie Clark, and I write sci-fi thriller sea adventures. I’m also a pediatrician, wife, and mom to two teen sons, two border collies and one very privileged cat named Bonsai. We live in west Kansas in a small rural town not far from Dodge City. I enjoy cooking, scuba diving, and practicing yoga. My books incorporate my travel, diving, and spearfishing experiences. They’re like a Jurassic Park of the Sea

The Order of the Dolphin series includes three books so far: Killing Dragons, Dragon Gold, and Dragon Clan. Book four: Dragon Song is currently with my line editor. Although I have a marine biologist protagonist, truly the stars of my novels are the dolphins who also have their own POV chapters. Exciting news is that both Killing Dragons and Dragon Clan made the short list for Chanticleer’s Global Thriller Award for High Stakes Fiction. The award-winning short story historical prologue to the series, Dragon of the Sea, is available free on my website for signing up for my newsletter; it was a finalist for the Chanticleer Short Story Awards in the Chaucer category. My newsletters share information I’m interested in, like animal communication and intelligence studies as well as news about dolphins rescuing lost swimmers, and I also let readers know about new releases.

These fun books are available wide wherever eBooks are sold, and print books may be found online at Barnes & Noble or Amazon. In Kansas, these independent bookstores carry my books: Ad Astra Books in Salina and Bookends in Hutchinson. Also, I believe that the Kansas library association bought my eBooks recently, so they should be available for free, at least to the South West Kansas library patrons. My books, both in print and eBook, are also available online directly from my website www.kristieclark.com which is a great way to support an independent author.  I also have signed copies available if anyone would like them—if so contact me directly please.

Many thanks, and I’m happy to connect with other authors in Kansas!
—Kristie

Welcome New Member Deborah Linn

1/23/2022

Picture
Today, we have the pleasure of welcoming a new member to KAC and District 5. From El Dorado, we welcome Deborah Linn, teacher and author.

When  I was still in grade school, my dad introduced me to the stories of Mark Twain. Now, as a high school English teacher, I'm on a mission to connect modern readers to classic literature. My blog KeepingClassics.com encourages teachers not to give up on reading classics in the classroom. I recently published the young adult, modern reimagining of the Great Gatsby, Just Daisy: A Gatsby Retelling. Conversations with my students inspired the writing of this novel. Every year, the same question comes up regarding Daisy Buchanan. If she had been from a different era with different role models and societal expectations, would she have still made the same decisions? Just Daisy attempts to answer that question. It can also be enjoyed as its own story even without in-depth knowledge of the original Gatsby.

Years ago, my original entrance into the writing arena started with writing lighthearted romance. I hope to get back to those someday because they are so much fun to write. For now, however, I'm focusing on my next YA classic retelling. It's an Outer Banks meets Tom Sawyer adventure set in the 1980s with two female descendants of the original treasure hunters.

When I'm not writing or teaching, I like visiting small-town museums and trying to beat my husband at board games. My four adult children are spread throughout the US, living the most interesting lives. My grandson likes to Facetime with me to watch SpongeBob movies together. As often as possible, I visit my parents to share a bottle of wine and laugh over our favorite Twain stories.

My goal in joining the group is to connect with other Kansas authors. One can never have too  many writer friends! I'm looking forward to meeting you.

Thank you for all of your support on my new book Posts of a Mid-century Kid!  I did 18 events, signings, interviews in November and December.  Here is a picture of me at Meadowlark in Lawrence. The side benefit of writing a book is meeting so many fascinating people like Clenece Hills at KLWN/KANU. Micki (Anamcara Press) and I had a great morning of book talks with her.

Poetry Book News from D6 Member, Cat Webling

1/20/2022

I am happy to announce the publication of my newest poetry collection!

The world can often feel like a roiling sea, whose waves, once brilliant blue, have descended into uproarious darkness. When it does, there may be nothing else to do but hold on tightly and hope that you're able to make it to the other side. This collection of poems explores the rolling waves, the blazing sunlight, the bitter chill, and coming home again.

The Symmetry of Falling Leaves debuts on January 25, 2022. It's available through most major book retailers.

Welcome New Member Kathleen Dultmeier

1/18/2022

Picture
Today, we are pleased to welcome Kathleen Dultmeier of Topeka to the Kansas Authors Club.

As we've been doing lately, we ask new members to share a little bit about themselves and their writing. Kathleen is eager to jump into creative writing and is looking forward to connecting with other writers. So, D-1 members, keep an eye out for Kathleen and give her a warm welcome.

Here's what Kathleen's been up to:

I don't have anything to share unless you want to see the corporate brochures and releases I write. Nothing too terribly exciting.  Since 1994, I've been writing for various businesses and corporations.

My goal is to meet other writers to discover how to write stories. I have so many stories in my mind but no idea how to translate from my brain to paper. In 2000, I had a supervisor tell me I'm not a very good writer so I stopped... but twenty years is long enough to hold onto what someone else thinks so I'm breaking free! It doesn't matter if I'm a bad writer, I'm not writing for her anyway.

Hopefully, I can find a mentor who will edit my work, and help me improve. I would rather eat glass than edit - there, their, they're - affect/effect - which/that - among/between - dangling participles, misplaced modifiers, and split infinitives - these rules make me nuts.

D-1 Roger Droz debuts first novel

1/17/2022

Picture
Rusty's Repair is member Roger Droz’s debut novel. This D-1 member never intended to become a writer. He just had an interest in telling stories, memoir stories, fictional stories, humorous stories.
Roger enrolled in several Washburn University writing classes as a senior citizen auditor.  In those classes, his desire was piqued by the influence and encouragement of Dr. Andrew Farkas. In one of his Advanced Fiction Writing classes, a workshop, Roger submitted what would later be one chapter of his novel. It was well-received by his fellow students, auditors, and Andy. Now, feeling like a writer, and knowing that "every author needs to write a novel," he began.
The result is Rusty's Repair.
The storyline: Rusty Jordan was born in poverty at the beginning of the twentieth century on a small farmstead in southeast Iowa. Soon, abandoned by his father and the death of his mother, young Rusty was left alone with the task of raising a baby sister, Janie. Once it was learned that Rusty and Janie were living alone on the farm, Janie was taken from him. Rusty was then left to search for both Janie and a place he could call home. His journey is one of hardship and perseverance.
Rusty's Repair is now available on Amazon in paperback and as  Kindle eBook.

A Note from Mark Scheel, D2:

Well, it's just been released--the newest issue of the international online magazine Inner Circle Writers' Magazine published by Clarendon House Publications in the UK.  I'm overwhelmed to be the featured subject (an extensive interview with numerous photos from my life) and pictured on the cover yet!  Done to promote my new novel The Potter's Wheel, it refers to the book as "a masterpiece."  Ha.  IMHO, that's stretching it a bit, but I'll take it nonetheless!  Can be purchased as an individual issue or yearly subscription.  It's truly an impressive writers' resource publication.  And I'm flattered beyond words to be a part.  Now, let's hope it sells some books!  Here's the promo and publisher link:

District 7 Member Publishes Book for Cat Lovers

1/12/2022

Picture
Award-Winning Author, James Kenyon, Publishes 23 True Cat Stories for the Cat Lover

Emporia, KS –James Kenyon, graduate of the Kansas State University College of Veterinary Medicine and a Kansas State Veterinary Distinguished Alumni recipient, has published A Cat Named Fatima: Tales of 23 Cats & The People Who Loved Them, with Meadowlark Press of Emporia, Kansas.

This is a book for people who love cats, 23 stories dedicated to those who adore their feline friends. From a three-legged barn cat to a Siamese that loved showers, from the best cat a fisherman could ever have to a veterinary clinic’s greeter, these cat stories will warm the heart, bring laughter, and perhaps a tear or two. Each story is illustrated by a delightful kitty sketch by the artist, Thomas Marple.

“Dr. Jim’s ability to tell a story about his patients and their people is unrivaled. All veterinarians have clients and patients whose stories brought us joy in our veterinary profession. I admire Jim’s ability to share those stories in a fascinating way. His gift is to make those clients and patients come to life and that makes this book so much fun to read. I can picture the patients and clients in their settings and fondly remember my patients too. Any animal lover or kind-hearted person will enjoy these stories. It’s not just about animals and their health, it’s about caring, kindness, and connections between individuals and the human-animal bond. The relationships make our lives so much more enjoyable,” writes Tom Johnson DVM Retired, Small Animal Practitioner 25 years, Director of the Iowa Veterinary Medical Association, and Director of the Veterinary Teaching Hospital at Iowa State University.

Kenyon was a veterinarian for 35 years in a mixed animal practice in Cedar Falls, Iowa. He served in the US Army Veterinary Corps and is an eight-time veterinary volunteer for the Iditarod Alaskan dog sled race. He is a past president of the Iowa Veterinary Medical Association as well as chairman of the Iowa Veterinary Medical Examining Board. Kenyon is the author of, A Cow for College and Other Stories of 1950s Farm Life and Golden Rule Days: History and Recollections of 109 Closed Kansas High Schools. Both books received commendation as Martin Kansas History Book Award winners.

A Cat Named Fatima is available in paperback (ISBN: ISBN: 978-1-956578-05-8) and hardcover (ISBN: 978-1-956578-06-5). The book can be ordered direct from the publisher (https://meadowlark-books.square.site/), the author (https://www.jamesrkenyon.com/), or through any bookstore. Picture
Today we are pleased to welcome new KAC member Ky Shorb who lives in District 1.

We'll let Ky introduce himself...

My name is Ky Shorb and I have been a police officer for the last 20 years (8 left in the tank).

I wanted to start writing now before I retired to get my feet wet in the process and to get some experience. I have just finished my first novel, Into the Gray.

As it currently stands, I intend to put down 3-5 in this series. Right now I am working through edits and getting a cover design.

Born and raised in Kansas, I really wanted to make as much of my book as 'local' as I could. Thank you so very much for the membership opportunity. I am so very excited to start plugging myself into this community.

District 2 Invites All Members to Attend January 15, 10am (Zoom) Meeting with Nelson Poetry Book Award Winner, Janice Northerns

1/10/2022

Saturday, January 15, 2022, starting at 10:00am

District 2 Monthly Meeting - Members of any district are welcome to attend.
Members of other districts who would like to attend should email Curtis Becker for a Zoom invite.

Janice Northerns will read and discuss work from her award-winning poetry collection, Some Electric Hum, followed by a Q&A session. Dr. Sandra Cox, judge for the Nelson Poetry Book Award, had this to say about Janice’s book: “Some Electric Hum reads … like a treatise on the ways communities are crafted by wanting, having, and then letting go. … This book exemplifies her skill in giving language to those fragile and ephemeral experiences of connection, as well as her determination to understand how connection might be felt in the barely perceptible hum of a completed circuit, closed but still alive with alternating electric currents.“
Picture
Janice Northerns, of Liberal, is the author of Some Electric Hum, winner of the 2021 KAC Nelson Poetry Book Award and the KU Byron Caldwell Smith Book Award, and  a WILLA Literary Award Finalist in Poetry.

The author grew up on a farm in rural West Texas and holds bachelor’s and master’s degrees from Texas Tech University, where she received the Robert S. Newton Award for Creative Writing. Her work has been widely published in literary journals. Honors include a Brush Creek Foundation for the Arts residency, a Sewanee Writers’ Conference scholarship, and numerous awards for individual poems.

Janice and her husband moved to Liberal in 1998, where she taught English at Seward County Community College before retiring in 2019 to write full-time. The landscapes and people of West Texas and southwest Kansas are a steady source of inspiration for her poetry.

Janice is a District 7 member of the Kansas Authors Club.
