November Writing News from Member Duane L. Herrmann

12/14/2023

Herrmann's accomplishments in November 2023:
  • Both Carrot Ranch and Adirondack Center for Writing posted three of his responses to their prompts.
  • The Oct/Nov issue of Harnisch Acres published a short, short story: 'Welcome Home.'
  • Lothlorian Poetry Jnl posted a set of five poems and announced that the print vol 28 will contain the first set of five of his poems they had posted earlier in the year.
  • The 10th anniversary anthology of Bards Against Hunger includes his poem: 'Waiting for Return,' and, to his surprise, the 2024 Poetry Review Datebook by Scars Publications has his poem: 'Perceptions,' posted earlier on their site, now for a week in December. The latter two of these are available (where else?) on Amazon.
  • And, at the end of the month, Fevers of the Mind, posted an interview with him at: https://feversofthemind.com/2023/11/29/a-fevers-of-the-mind-quick-9-interview-with-duane-l-herrmann/
Congratulations, Duane!

Unearthing the True Cross, a novel by Tom Mach

While landscaping on the Mount of Olives, Dante Leon encounters a Bedouin man who insists that he discovered, while exploring a Qumran cave, a map showing where Jesus was really crucified. To prove him wrong, he digs in that spot and finds five pieces of petrified wood as well as a scroll written by Jospeh of Arimathea. A deaf and mute lost orphan girl encounters Dante, who cures her with prayer and one of the artifacts. A blind boy is similarly cured. Dante and his family run tests on these artifacts and conclude they have found the True Cross. Terrorists are out to kill Dante's daughter as well as the pope who is about to announce to the world that these wooden pieces, when put together, form the crossbeam of Christ

Invitation to Join Salina Writing Group

12/5/2023

Let’s Start a Salina Writing Group That Has Staying Power

By Mike Durall, Kansas Authors Club District 4 President

I’ve never cared for writing groups that consist only of “read arounds,” in which people read their work and ask for comments. Sometimes when these writing groups are sponsored by public libraries, it’s a random assortment of mostly strangers and nobody knows what to say if the readings aren’t all that good.

I’m proposing a new writer’s group, one in which participants will commit to delve into the writing process, how we generate ideas, where our passion comes from, and how we stick with it when the words don’t flow.

I would like to start a group in which we include references, stories, and information about how other writers have addressed the art and craft of writing. We could talk about writers we admire, and why. We could talk about books.

We could talk about our own ideas that are in formation and ask others if our ideas have merit and how they might further be shaped.

And of course, from time to time we would read our own work. I believe these “read arounds” would be vastly more meaningful if people knew one another better, and what motivates them to write what they do.

I suggest we schedule an initial meeting in Salina, at the Ad Astra Coffeehouse and Bookstore, 141 North Santa Fe Avenue. From there, we can determine how frequently we wish to meet, and what we would like to accomplish. Also, there are Zoom possibilities.

Give me a holler if you’re interested.
