Bring the first fifteen pages of your manuscript on your laptop or your phone, and Grant will read them free through SecondRead, the manuscript check he built at Grain Valley Publishing in Wichita.
SecondRead reads a finished manuscript and reports, page by page, where the book disagrees with itself. A character's age that doesn't add up. A name spelled two ways. A timeline that slips a year. Real-world claims are checked against the record, and the report names the source. It never rewrites a word.
Greg Pierce, president and publisher of ACTA Publications in Chicago, sent Grant a finished novel this summer and got the results he needed to see.
"I forwarded the report to the author, who addressed almost every item himself without a call from me," Pierce said. "For a small house with no fact-checking department, that is a valuable second set of eyes I could not have afforded any other way. It read, it reported, and it left the decisions to us."
A full read of a fiction or nonfiction manuscript up to 90,000 words is only $200 when booked at the convention. Writers can send a manuscript now through the SecondRead website and get the convention price.
Grant is a Kansas Authors Club member and a J. Donald Coffin Memorial Book Award winner. His table is in the education center, where the workshops meet Saturday and Sunday.
