Martin Kansas History Book Award

The Martin Kansas History Book Award was created in 2018 as a tribute to Gail Lee Martin, who was KAC State Archivist from 1995-2005. Gail Lee Martin joined Kansas Authors Club in 1992 and was a member of District 5. Martin enjoyed writing fiction, nonfiction, stories for children, journalism, history, and poetry. Martin’s work was published in numerous magazines. She also published two books: Clyde Owen Martin Family Memories of His Life and Times, and My Flint Hills Childhood, which was a winner of the Ferguson Kansas History Book Award in 2010. The funding for the Martin Kansas History Book Award comes from the Gail Lee Martin Memorial established in her name. This book award is open exclusively for Kansas history. An award of $100.00 will be given each year according to the rules printed below.

- The contest is open to any Kansas Authors Club member.
- The book must be a minimum of 50 pages in length.
- The entry must have been published, issued in print, and available for public distribution within the two years prior to June 1, 2023.
- The subject of the book must be Kansas History. This may be a history of the state, a county, a city, church, school, institution, an individual, a way of life, or any FACTUAL account of any phase of Kansas history. NO FICTION. NOT A GENEALOGY.
- No entry fee is required.
- Two copies of the winning book will be donated. One to the KAC shelves at the Spencer Research Library at KU in Lawrence. The second to the Gail Martin family.
- The winner will be notified by September 1, in order to allow time for banquet reservations.
- The award will be presented to the winner at the annual gathering in October. The winner will be notified of details in advance. If the winner is unable to attend, the award will be mailed.
- Non-winners’ books will be available for pickup at the convention.
- Mail two copies of your book and your completed form by June 15, 2023, to:
