Clyde Toland Winds Silver Medallion in Will Rogers Medallion Awards Competition

A note from member, Clyde Tolland:

I recently received a Silver Medallion in the Will Rogers Medallion Awards competition. This is for volume one, American Hero, Kansas Heritage, of my Becoming Frederick Funston Trilogy and was in the category of Western Biographies/Memoirs. This volume previously received a Spur Award from the Western Writers of America.

Member Clyde Toland, from District 3, is one of three finalists for the Will Rogers Medallion Award in the category of Western Biographies/Memoirs. This is for American Hero, Kansas Heritage, the first volume of my Becoming Frederick Funston Trilogy. The winner will be announced in October.

Western Writers of America announced on March 4 at the Tucson Book Festival that Clyde Toland is a 2023 Spur Award recipient for American Hero, Kansas Heritage as the Best First Nonfiction Book of books published in 2022.

Clyde W. Toland, received a BA in history from the University of Kansas, a MA in history from the University of Wisconsin-Madison, and a JD from the University of Kansas. He is a semi-retired lawyer in Iola, Kansas, and a District 2 member of Kansas Authors Club.

Welcome New Member Clyde Toland

Today we have the honor of welcoming Clyde Toland of Iola to the Kansas Authors Club. He'll be a part of District 3.

In 1995, working with the Allen County Historical Society, Clyde Toland helped raise funds to move Maj. Gen. Frederick Funston's childhood home into Iola. That's when he got the idea of writing a book about Funston.

Toland has now published the first of three volumes of a biography of Iola's favorite son, "American Hero, Kansas Heritage: Frederick Funston's Early Years 1865-1890."
The other two volumes will be published later this year.
