Roger Ringer
March 29, 1955 - July 9, 2023

Roger Ringer, D6 member from Medicine Lodge, Kansas, joined Kansas Authors Club in 2021. That same year, he was the winner of the 2021 Martin Kansas History Book Award with his book, True Tales of Kansas (The History Press, 2021)

Roger published books on Kansas history and was a Cowboy Poet. He was a regular columnist for The Rural Messenger with stories often picked up by other Kansas papers. He was also a member of the Western Music Association and the Cowboy Storytellers Association of the Western Plains.

True Tales of Kansas

Both of Ringer’s books are collections of very short pieces about people, businesses, places, and events in or related to Kansas . . . all the stories take place someplace in Kansas or are about people with some Kansas connection. Fatty Arbuckle, for example, only lived in Kansas as an infant, but has a relatively long story in True Tales. . . the stories are intriguing and interesting, some of the featured people are also intriguing and I wanted to read more about them (Pelican Pete in Eccentric Kansas, for example, and Maud Stevens Wagner in True Tales).

Ringer’s writing style is casual, as if he recorded and transcribed the stories being spoken rather than writing them. This makes the books easy and quick to read. They are not meant to be academic history, but collections of stories, and in this endeavor, Ringer is completely successful.

2021 Martin Kansas History Judge

Ellen Hansen is professor emerita in the Department of Social Sciences, Sociology, and Criminology at Emporia State University, where she taught cultural geography for 22 years. Her areas of teaching and research interest are gender and development, geography and history of the U.S.-Mexico border, and geography of Kansas and the Midwest. She is a fiber arts enthusiast, has taught knitting classes at Flint Hills Technical College, and is faculty advisor to the Unwind Fiber Crafts Club at Emporia State. She is rarely without a knitting or crochet project in her hands.

What kind of writing do you do?

KANSAS HISTORY, NEWSPAPER OPINION/BLOG. Anything I can get hired to do.

What writing projects have you completed or are currently working on?

I have 3 books on Kansas History published by History Press. KANSAS ODDITIES. ECCENTRIC KANSAS, & TRUE TALES OF KANSAS. One self published work of country and cowboy poetry, COWBOYS, PLOWBOYS, & COUNTRY FOLK.

I am a regular columnist for THE RURAL MESSENGER plus the stories are picked up by other papers. I have two manuscripts of fiction and one in progress. One children's book project. I am getting ready to start two more volumes on Kansas History.

Do you have a website or a facebook page that you'd like us to share with other KAC members?

Is there anything else you’d like other KAC members to know about you?

I am a lifelong Kansan that has spent my whole life in rural Kansas. I am a supporter for Kansas and rural causes.

What would you like to gain from your membership with the Kansas Authors Club?

I would like to know others that are working at the craft and expand knowledge of the business side of writing.
