ARTERIAL INK: A WILLIAM ALLEN WHITE LEGACY, VOLUME II

2022 CALL FOR SUBMISSIONS

This contest is for writing in fiction, nonfiction, or poetry. The anthology recognizes writers who best evoke a connection to William Allen White, ‘The Sage of Emporia’. In his time as editor of The Emporia Gazette, White published fiction, non-fiction, and poetry and became known around the world. Red Rocks, his home in Emporia, remains as a state historic site honoring his legacy.

The William Allen White Community Partnership board began the annual publication of Arterial Ink in 2021 as a means of contributing to the operation of the home and is now calling for submissions for Volume II. White’s life was many-faceted. We welcome submissions interpreting that connection in many ways: historical, cultural, political, or personal importance, whether literal, imaginary, or metaphorical.

Winners in each genre will be published in Arterial Ink: A William Allen White Legacy, Volume II, and will have the opportunity to deliver their winning entries at the William Allen White Legacy Day celebration in Emporia, Kansas on October 1, 2022. The competition is open to all writers regardless of geographical location. Submissions may not exceed 3,000 words.

For consideration, please send up to three entries to: William Allen White Community Partnership, Inc., 917 Exchange St., Emporia, KS 66801, ATTN: Arterial Ink 2022 or submit your entry at www.reddirtpress.com.

Deadline Extended: April 20, 2021

The William Allen White Community Partnership is looking for poems, stories, and essays for an anthology about the legacy of William Allen White. The project is a fundraiser to support  Red Rocks, the WAW home in Emporia.

Not sure what to submit? How about an essay about your time as a student at the WAW School of Journalism at KU? What about a poem inspired by time spent at Peter Pan Park, a site donated to the city of Emporia by the Whites after the death of their daughter, Mary. Perhaps you attended the William Allen White grade school in Emporia and have stories you could share. Have you been to Red Rocks? Did you ever work for the Emporia Gazette?

Send your questions and entries to Kerry Moyer. Kerry is a District 2 member, our state prose contest manager, and he serves as a board member for the William Allen White Community Partnership.

Invitation to Submit: William Allen White Legacy stories, poems, and essays

11/16/2020

Update: Deadline extended! Get your entries in by April 20, 2021.

Kerry Moyer, District 2 member, sends the following invitation:

Hey friends, I am collecting submissions for a book project that I am spearheading for the William Allen White Community Partnership. I am on the board and came up with the idea of putting out a book as a fundraiser. The pandemic has created challenges in terms of tours at Red Rocks and putting on events that would generate revenue for us.

There is no monetary prize or payment. The only real rule for submission is that the piece needs to deal with the William Allen White legacy in some way. We are looking for short essays, short stories, poems, or whatever your creative writing medium is for this project. My email is kmoyer72@yahoo.com.
