Countering Censorship by Writing

Picture
Recently we’ve seen a movement to suppress what books schools and libraries readers can read. Books have been burned in Tennessee and  a PEN study documented 1,145 unique book titles banned in 86 school districts in 26 states between July 2021 and April 2022. Kansas is among the states where such book bans have been imposed by school districts. There have been 713 instances of censorship in Texas, 456 bans in Pennsylvania, and 204 in Florida.

As writers, how do we respond to these violations of our First Amendment rights?

Gretchen Eick has taken up controversial issues in her two scholarly histories/biographies and five novels. She is committed to using the power of her pen (keyboard?) to fight this suppression. She encourages writers to do the same by including in their stories characters of diverse races, nationalities, religions, sexual identification, and classes, and in their historical fiction, by including what what was happening to people living with those different identities. How do you do that?

Gretchen Eick is a professor of history emerita who now teaches in Wichita State’s Lifelong Learning program. She taught 20 years at Friends University and in Latvia and Bosnia and Herzegovina thanks to Fulbright Fellowships.

Natalee Ganyon just joined Kansas Authors Club, attended her first meeting, and sent greetings to the fellow authors! Welcome to Kansas Authors Club, Natalee!

Hi fellow authors,

I enjoyed our zoom meetings yesterday. Looks like an interesting bunch. I have recently joined Kansas Authors Club. It's about time because I have already published 8 children's stories in 2 books. I am happy to announce the 2nd one is ready for preorder on Amazon and will be 'out' October 17th. These are fun mostly animal stories with adages that kids today may not hear.

Example: he got too big for his britches, there's a time to talk and time to be quiet, it's what's INside that counts, honesty is the best policy. You get the picture.

Jan Hurst (Member-at-large) illustrated most of the stories. Holly Frieson (D4) illustrated one as well. Mennonite Press (Member-at-large) printed the first Here's How That Happened. Trilogy printed Here's How That Happened volume 2. The 2nd HHTH book will also be be on the animated read aloud book YIPPEE :) the young person will watch a book read with sound effects.

I have been a storyteller 40 years with puppets as a sidekick and with COVID, I finally put some stories to book form.

Thanks again for the great opportunity of being amongst ya'll!;) Let me know where book signings are if you will!

New L.M. Montgomery-Inspired Novel Takes Place in the Flint Hills of Kansas

Emporia, KS – Meadowlark Press announces the publication of Ann of Sunflower Lane by award-winning author Julie A. Sellers. This novel is a tribute to the Kansas Flint Hills, booklovers and reading, and Anne of Green Gables by L.M. Montgomery.

Sellers explains that the novel is not an adaptation of Montgomery’s classic novel, but a story of the way books and reading impact readers. “The title character, Ann Alwyn, is an avid reader, and when she comes to live with the grandparents she never knew at Sunflower Lane farm, she discovers a kindred spirit in an old edition of Anne of Green Gables. Her reading of that and other texts frames her experiences as she integrates herself into life on the farm and in the small-town community of Storey, Kansas.”

“Ann of Sunflower Lane is a love-letter to books and reading, and especially to the power of Anne of Green Gables to reflect and to shape life,” says Elizabeth Rollins Epperly, Professor Emerita and founder of the L.M. Montgomery Institute at the University of Prince Edward Island.

Marah Gubar, Associate Professor of Literature at MIT and author of Artful Dodgers: Reconceiving the Golden Age of Children’s Literature (2009), said, “I love how vividly this book conjures up contemporary rural life in a small town, chronicling how the transplanted Ann comes to terms with her troubled family history by putting down new roots and reinvigorating old ones.”

“I love this character, this book. Readers of all ages will fall in love with Ann of Sunflower Lane,” said Kansas writer Cheryl Unruh, author of Gravedigger’s Daughter: Vignettes from a Small Kansas Town.

Sellers was the Kansas Authors Club 2020 Prose Writer of the Year and the Overall Poetry (2022) and Prose (2017, 2019) winner of the Kansas Voices Writing Contest sponsored by the Winfield Arts and Humanities Council. She is the author of Kindred Verse: Poems Inspired by Anne of Green Gables (Blue Cedar Press, 2021).

The book can be purchased at meadowalarkbookstore.com and ordered wherever books are sold.

Puzzled, new poetry book by Ruth Maus

Puzzled, poems by Ruth Maus, Art by Katja Weiss
Published by: Meadowlark Press, Emporia, KS, September 2022
ISBN: 978-1-956578-25-6

For Immediate Release

New Poetry Collection by Ruth Maus Includes Paintings by Her German Cousin

Topeka, KS – The poetry and art in Puzzled (Meadowlark Press, 2022) has connections dating back to 1882, when the great-grandfather of Ruth Maus came to the US as a young boy with his parents and siblings. They were Germans who eventually settled on a farm in Holton, Kansas, where a descendent still lives and farms to this day. The ancestral village, which Ruth Maus was able to visit in 1997, is now a part of Poland. Cousins met, including descendent of a brother to Ruth’s great-grandfather who stayed behind. Gertrud Knuth and Ruth have maintained contact since that trip, and Gertrud’s daughter, Katja Weiss, an artist living near Hamburg, Germany, has taken over those communications in this digital age.

“I sent them a copy of my first poetry book, Valentine, in 2019.  Periodically, I would email Katja one of my new poems, and she would email me one of her new paintings,” Maus writes. Then the German cousin suggested that Maus could use her paintings in a future poetry book.

Maus wrote most of the poems in Puzzled during the pandemic, and the 110-page book is filled will her German cousin’s full-color paintings.

“I continue to be amazed that despite 140 years, thousands of miles, different languages, two world wars, and multiple generations, we unacquainted cousins have collaborated on this project!” writes Maus.

“Throughout Puzzled, Ruth Maus’s skillfully-wrought poems abound in delight and wonder, her curiosity and playfulness on full display. These are fun and memorable gems . . .” writes Jonathan Greenhause, author of Cupping Our Palms, winner of the Birdy Poetry Prize (Meadowlark Press, 2022).

“Katja Weiss’s art provides counterpoints of quiet, restful, yet mysterious places to contemplate the poems. Puzzled is synergy in its purest form,” from Barbara Waterman-Peters, artist, author, and illustrator.

Puzzled is available at meadowlarkbookstore.com and can be ordered wherever books are sold.

Picture
Ruth Maus, a native of Topeka, Kansas, has followed a love of learning around the world to places large and small, to pyramids and hedgerows, presidential balls and Kansas hayfields.

She represented Smith College at the annual Glasscock Intercollegiate Poetry Contest where past contestants have included James Merrill, Sylvia Plath, Katha Pollit, Mary Jo Salter, James Agee, Frederick Buechner, Kenneth Koch, Donald Hall, William Manchester, Muriel Rukeyser, and Gjertrud Schnackenberg. Her poems have appeared in a variety of literary publications.

Her first book of poetry, Valentine, published by Meadowlark Press, was a finalist in the 2019 Birdy Contest.

Ruth is a member of Kansas Authors Club, District 1.

A Caldecott Honor and two-time New York Times Best Illustrated Book of the Year recipient, Stephen T. Johnson continues to challenge our notions what constitutes a children’s book. From the classic 32-page picture book format to interactive and removable three-dimensional puzzle pieces to a 23-foot, expandable accordion book, Stephen is constantly exploring new ways of creating wonderment through words, art and ideas.

In his presentation, Stephen will discuss his wide range of subject matter and artistic processes of problem-solving complex ideas, narratives and content. Through a selection of his children’s books, he will show how they become the inspiration for other sources of creative contexts such as museum exhibits and public artwork.

The presentation will be participatory and open for attendees to share their ideas and engage with Stephen regarding all aspects of transforming an idea into a reality.

Stephen T. Johnson’s visually arresting and conceptually rich body of work forges connections between words, objects and ideas. His art spans a broad range of concepts and contexts and can be seen in site-specific public art commissions, gallery and museum exhibitions and original award-winning children’s books such Alphabet City, a Caldecott Honor, a New York Times Best Illustrated book of the year, and featured in its entirety on Good Morning America. His latest children’s book, My Big Silver Rocket Ship, will be published in February 2023 by Simon & Schuster.

His drawings and paintings are in numerous private collections including those of musician Paul Simon, and in the permanent collections of Carnegie Mellon University in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, the New Britain Museum of American Art in Connecticut, and the National Portrait Gallery at the Smithsonian Institution in Washington, D.C.
Among his public art is a 66-foot mosaic mural at the DeKalb Avenue Subway Station in Brooklyn New York, a 58-foot mosaic mural at the Universal City/Studio City Metro Station in Los Angeles, California, and 33 glass panels for the Dallas Love Field Airport in Dallas, Texas. Childrens' Poetry Judges

9/15/2022

Each year for the past twenty-two years, Circle Benton Elementary (Benton, KS) sponsors a writing and art contest for third through sixth grade students. The theme for the 2021-22 school year was sports and hobbies. Awards are given to the children with the top entries in prose, poetry, and art for each grade. The winners of the first through third places and honorable mention entries are recognized at an assembly with certificates and a booklet containing their entry. After the awards are presented, winners autograph books for the judges and their friends. Cynthia Ross and Sandee Taylor, Kansas Authors Club District 5 members, have judged the contest multiple years. This year Cynthia judged the poetry category for sixth grade and Sandee judged fourth grade poetry.

MAKE YOUR MARK ON OUR GROWING ORGANIZATION!

Do you have talent to spare? Time to invest in your community of writers? We are looking to fill the following positions in 2023.

Contest Managers: We are actively seeking individuals to manage our 2023 adult poetry and youth writing contests. This person should be comfortable using Submittable (and/or willing to learn how to manage things on the back side). An enthusiasm for promoting and growing our contests is always a plus. Contest managers are charged with selecting judges for the contest, assuring that entries meet the requirements, answering contest questions, and preparing the awards presentation at the annual convention each October. Contest managers work closely with each other and with the Manager. We do ask that managers not enter the contest that they are managing while they are serving in the position. (So if you are a prose writer, managing the poetry contest might be the ideal job for you!)

Publications and Website: Do you have experience with layout and design? Are you proficient (or willing to learn) programs such as Microsoft Publisher and/or Adobe InDesign? Would you like to gain experience with website work or email newsletter services? Perhaps you would be interested in joining our publications team. We currently produce a print yearbook and an electronic newsletter, and publication opportunities within Kansas Authors Club may just be growing! Extra eyes for editing and proofreading are also always appreciated.

Social Media Contributors: If you follow us on Facebook, you already understand the power of teamwork to give an organization a presence. If your district (or area of writing interest) is underrepresented, perhaps you would like to join our teal of social media contributors. We also could use assistance with Twitter and Instagram.

State Secretary: Job Duties (quick version) attends 3 board meetings each year plus the annual membership meeting in October. Our Secretary keeps the minutes, prepares a summary for publication, and will work closely with the manager and President as a member of the executive board.

State Financial Officer: Job Duties (quick version) attends 3 board meetings each year plus the annual membership meeting in October. Our Financial Officer reviews financial reports generated by the Manager quarterly, sets our budget in coordination with the Manager each year, and works closely with President as a member of the executive board.

District Representatives: Each district needs a representative to the board. The commitment includes attending 3 board meetings each year plus the annual membership meeting in October. This is a great way to get to know Kansas Authors Club in more depth and to perform a service for your local community of writers. If you are interested in helping out at the district level, talk to your District President about the many ways you can be involved. Note that District Representatives are elected or appointed at the district level. Pay attention to memos from your officers as districts will begin filling local positions toward the end of this year.
