The William Allen White Community Partnership is looking for poems, stories, and essays for an anthology about the legacy of William Allen White. The project is a fundraiser to support Red Rocks, the WAW home in Emporia. Not sure what to submit? How about an essay about your time as a student at the WAW School of Journalism at KU? What about a poem inspired by time spent at Peter Pan Park, a site donated to the city of Emporia by the Whites after the death of their daughter, Mary. Perhaps you attended the William Allen White grade school in Emporia and have stories you could share. Have you been to Red Rocks? Did you ever work for the Emporia Gazette? Send your questions and entries to Kerry Moyer. Kerry is a District 2 member, our state prose contest manager, and he serves as a board member for the William Allen White Community Partnership. We provide uninterrupted writing time, a European-style gourmet dinner served on weeknights, the camaraderie of other professional writers when you want it, and a community kitchen stocked with the basics. Kerry Moyer, District 2 member, sends the following invitation: Hey friends, I am collecting submissions for a book project that I am spearheading for the William Allen White Community Partnership. I am on the board and came up with the idea of putting out a book as a fundraiser. The pandemic has created challenges in terms of tours at Red Rocks and putting on events that would generate revenue for us. There is no monetary prize or payment. The only real rule for submission is that the piece needs to deal with the William Allen White legacy in some way. We are looking for short essays, short stories, poems, or whatever your creative writing medium is for this project. My email is kmoyer72@yahoo.com. 105: Meadowlark Reader is a new literary print journal featuring true Kansas stories written by Kansas residents (past or present).
“Beginnings” is the theme of the inaugural issue. Submissions will be accepted Nov. 1 - Dec. 31. Submission guidelines are available on the Submit page on the journal’s website. Kansas writers are invited to submit true stories set in Kansas. The journal’s editors are looking for narratives and essays that are personal and powerful, stories that linger with a reader. The name, 105: Meadowlark Reader, was chosen with the aim of reaching the diversity of writers and readers in all 105 counties. Each issue will also feature a directory of resources for Kansas writers, such as writing groups, book printers, publishers, editing services, etc. Inclusion in our directory is free. Advertising space is also available. Special subscription rates are available for those who subscribe to the journal in advance; $13 for a single issue, $25 for an annual subscription (2/year). See the website for details. From D2 member, Vicki Julian:
We could all use a little humor right now, and I hope you might have a story to contribute to my book which will be released this Christmas season (by December 1). The title, It Wasn't Funny...Then is a collection of most embarrassing moments. My deadline for submissions is NOVEMBER 1 and can be as short as a paragraph up to 3-500 words. Because of the content, I promise discretion, and I can keep your identity anonymous to every one but me, if you wish. To give you an idea of what I'm looking for, here are some examples that will appear in the book: one woman stood up to eulogize her father at his memorial service and had a "break wind" moment, another had Montezuma's revenge while playing video poker at the casino and left a trail of brown spots running out the door, and another couple was "discovered" at an inopportune moment by their 15 year old son. Please consider submitting a story--the world could use a laugh and writers are the perfect ones to do it! Please submit to vickijulian@sunflower.com. Gretchen Eick, District 5 member, has sent the following invitation to writers--
Dear Writer: Cora Poage and Gretchen Eick are working on a book project we thought you might want to participate in. We are preparing an anthology of short pieces on death. We think that in this time of pandemic cultures like many of those in the US are totally overwhelmed in large part because they deny death and have little to no experience with it other than in violent television shows and movies. We want to assemble “takes” on death in a variety of genres: poetry, meditation, self-help, short stories, flash fiction, memories, and insights from personal experiences, from people who work in the death business (mortuaries, hospice, clergy (rabbis, priests, imams, pastors), and from counselors (spiritual, financial and psychological). We want a mix of races, religions, ages, subcultures represented. Might you have something you have written you are willing for us to consider? Or is your muse prodding you to write something you might share? Obviously, we will not be able to publish all submissions we receive. We are working with a small press, Blue Cedar Press. We envision a book of 150-200 pages. We invite you to submit your contribution by the end of June to bluecedarpress@gmail.com with “Death Project” in the subject line. Please send it in a Word document. Feel free to encourage others to submit, too. There will be no profits to us, to the press, or any of the writers whose selections are included. Any profit from this project will be donated to Doctors without Borders who are working on the frontlines in regions of the globe that are about to be hit by the COVID-19 virus. Thank you for considering this request. Stay safe and look for the opportunities that reside in this moment. Keep writing! Gretchen Eick, professor of history emerita and author, eickgc@gmail.com Cora Poage, spiritual counselor and life coach, cora@corapoage.com PS: Please submit by the end of June. |
